Most bags are bought for how they look on a shelf and judged on how they behave on a Tuesday.
The gap between those two moments is where unworn bags come from. Closing it takes about ten minutes of honest thinking about what you carry and how you move, and it is the difference between a bag you use for years and one that lives in a wardrobe.
Start with what has to fit
Empty your current bag onto a table. Not the version of your bag you would like to have — the actual contents. A phone, a wallet and keys need far less bag than a laptop, a water bottle and a pair of flats, and the difference between those two lives is roughly ten centimetres of width and five of depth.

Then think about how you carry
Strap drop — the distance from your shoulder to the top of the bag — decides where the weight lands, and it is the single most overlooked measurement in bag buying.
- 20–24 cm: the bag sits under the arm, close to the body. Neat, but you have to lift your elbow to get into it.
- 25–35 cm: the bag sits at the waist. The most versatile range for a shoulder bag worn over a coat.
- 50–60 cm: crossbody territory. The bag sits at the hip, the weight goes across the back rather than down one shoulder, and both hands stay free.
- Top handle only: the most formal option and the least practical. Lovely for an evening, tiring for a commute.
An adjustable strap gives you two bags for the price of one, and a detachable one gives you three. It is worth paying attention to the hardware: a strap that adjusts through a stiff buckle will never be adjusted.
Five things worth checking before you buy
- Structure. A rigid, lined bag holds its shape and protects what is inside, but it is heavy empty and unforgiving when overfilled. An unlined bag folds flat, weighs almost nothing and forgives overpacking, but slumps when half empty. Neither is better — decide which failure you would rather live with.
- Closure. A zip for crowded places and cycling. A magnetic clasp for speed. An open tote only if you never put it down in public. Choose for the commute, not for the photograph.
- Interior. One slip pocket sized for a phone is worth more than five compartments you will never learn the purpose of. A light-coloured lining makes finding things dramatically easier than a black one.
- Base. A flat, reinforced base means the bag stands up on the floor next to you instead of falling over and emptying itself. Metal feet are a small luxury that pays for itself on the first café floor.
- Weight. Weigh the bag empty if you can. Two hundred grams of difference is invisible in a photograph and very noticeable by the end of a day.
Materials, honestly
- Full-grain leather softens into shape and takes a patina. Heaviest of the options, and the one that lasts longest.

- Woven leather keeps its shape without a heavy lining and hides scuffs well, which makes it unusually practical for something that looks decorative.
- Raffia and canvas weigh next to nothing and read as summer. They do not carry into winter, which is fine as long as you buy them knowing that.

Most people are best served not by one perfect bag but by two honest ones: a structured everyday shoulder bag in a neutral that goes with everything you own, and a small crossbody for the days you want your hands free.
